Ancestor hunting is sometimes frustrating if you just count on a paper trail. If you know the ancestral townland (those little outlying rural settlements from towns and villages)then you can go and chat to old residents. Often those are the hottest tips on the ancestor trail. But don't discount those inner promptings, an intuition to suddenly turn left down a little boreen. Often those impulses lead you to the veritable pot of gold in terms of your search. Happy ancestor hunting!

Which reminds me that when I was trekking around I just told the driver that I was staying at a particular B&B and the dropped me out front even though it wasn't a standard stop. Likewise, for pick ups if you put your arm out you can flag them down for a pick up. The B&B proprietor will advise you on that. Yes, there is a lot to be said for the kindness of Bus Éireann drivers.

That's a good point, John, about the Three network for rural areas - although it can be patchy. We can't get it but a mile higher up they can get a signal. That's just life in the country. But the best advice is to go with the company with best coverage in the area you want to explore and accept that country living includes mobile signal free zones. Bee

I've written a blog which addresses your questions in greater detail then I could in an email.
See the long answer at http://irishblessingstours.com/blog/2012/04/11/is-it-possible-to-travel-around-ireland-using-only-public-transport/
Thanks for asking the questions. It's inspiring to know what travelers need to know.

For rural mobile/celll/smart phone coverage I now suggest looking at Three.ie . They have come a long way in the last year since being awarded the National Broadband Scheme coverage. I have been in some very remote rural spots lately and received almost full signal coverage by them.

They seem to be the most generous with data packs and roaming. In fact I do not think Three customers from Europe have any roaming charges here. They are also the only mobile company that allow and even encourage Skype use without including heavy data use charges.

Important sound advice. A lot to be gained from a public transport travelled vacation. Taking the odd taxi or local tour guide with transport is a much lesser expense and lesser stress than car rental. Overall there is a touring slow down so actually more of Ireland is experienced.

Rural buses are also often obliging. I've known many bus drivers go off route to take a travelling passenger direct to a B&B or hostel to save an extra hike at the end of a day.

Hi, I am an artist/writer from Australia. I will be visiting Ireland from May to August 2012. I am very interested in visiting a number of thin places and ancient sacred sites that are away from the main tourist routes. I will be travelling by public transport. Could you advise me of any stone circles and other neolithic sites that you know that are accessible by public transport or that are within walking distance of a bus or train station. Is it possible to vist the forest and national park in Cavan without a car.
Thankyou - Suzanne
